How Wineries Sell Their Wine Club by Email
Most club email that a non-member receives is an invitation to join. The Joy Cork archive holds 368 emails whose main purpose is the wine club, from 113 wineries, and nearly all of them are recruitment. The typical one runs about 370 words with 9 images, leads with the pitch, and usually leaves out the price.
At a glance
- 368 club emails from 113 wineries, about 2% of the archive.
- 78% contain a club pitch section, and half have a dedicated call-to-action block.
- Only 27% state a price, and 14% state a member discount.
- September is the busiest month for club email, and October and November the quietest.
Why is this about recruitment and not shipment notices?
Because of how the archive is collected. Joy Cork subscribes to wineries’ public mailing lists. It doesn’t join their clubs. Shipment notices, allocation offers and customization reminders go to members, so we rarely see them.
The archive has only 12 shipment notices, from 9 wineries. That is too few to say anything reliable about how they are built, so this article doesn’t try. What follows describes the club email a prospect gets.
How is a club email built?
| Measure | Median | Middle half |
|---|---|---|
| Words | 366 | 260–493 |
| Images | 9 | |
| Sections | 4 |
These are short emails with a lot of pictures. Joy Cork breaks each email into sections and records the job each one does. In club emails, the sections that turn up are:
| Section | Share of club emails |
|---|---|
| Club pitch | 78% |
| Call-to-action block | 50% |
| Hero image | 34% |
| Headline | 30% |
| An offer | 25% |
| A specific wine | 23% |
| Story | 17% |
| An event | 14% |
The two most common openings are the pitch straight away, or a hero image and then the pitch. Fewer than one in four name a specific wine, and fewer than one in five tell a story. The club itself is the subject.
What do club emails say about price, dates and discounts?
Less than you might expect.
| States | Share of club emails |
|---|---|
| A price | 27% |
| A member discount, such as a percentage off | 14% |
| A ship or pickup date | 10% |
| A deadline to customize a shipment | under 1% |
About three club emails in four ask the reader to join without saying what membership costs in the email. The price is presumably a click away. Whether that helps or hurts, the archive can’t say, since it has no click or signup data. It can say that stating the price in the email is the less common choice.
How do the subject lines differ?
Club subject lines talk to the reader more directly than other winery email. In the 12 months to September 30, 2026, among 166 club emails:
- 27% used “you” or “your”, against 13% of all winery subject lines;
- 22% included the winery’s name, against 12% overall;
- 5% were phrased as a question, against 2% overall.
Subject-line patterns across every email type are covered separately.
When do wineries send club emails?
Through the whole year, with a lean toward the weeks before a shipment. September has the most club emails in the archive (49), then May (40) and June (38). November (20) and October (22) have the fewest, when the calendar fills with holiday offers. Several December club emails are gift memberships.
Two examples show the timing device at work. A Sonoma County winery sent a club email in May 2026 built around its coming spring shipment: join now and the next shipment is yours. It ran 233 words with 17 images. The same winery made the same move in September ahead of its fall shipment. The pitch isn’t “join our club” in the abstract. It is “join before this date and here is what arrives”.
A less common format came from a Texas winery in July 2026: a membership framed as adopting a row of vines, with a limited number of rows. It is a distinctive format: the membership is a thing with a limited supply, and the email says so.
What can you check in your own club email?
Take the last email you sent to non-members about your club and compare it with the tables above:
- Does it open with the pitch, or does the reader scroll to find it?
- Does it state the price, a member discount, or the next shipment date? Each of those is the less common choice, which may be a reason to do it or a reason you didn’t.
- Is it tied to something happening soon, or could it have been sent any week of the year?
None of these has a correct answer. They are the places where club emails differ from one another.
FAQ
How long is a typical wine club email?
In the Joy Cork archive the median is 366 words, with the middle half between 260 and 493 words, and a median of 9 images. That is from 368 club emails sent by 113 wineries.
Do wineries put the club price in the email?
Usually not. 27% of club emails in the archive state a price and 14% state a member discount.
When do wineries promote their wine club?
All year. In the archive, September, May and June have the most club emails and October and November the fewest.
What does a wine club shipment notice usually include?
The archive can’t say. Shipment notices go to members, and Joy Cork’s subscriptions are to public mailing lists, so it holds only 12 of them.
A note on these figures: they are counts from the Joy Cork archive as of October 10, 2026. “Club email” means an email whose main purpose is the wine club, as Joy Cork’s analysis classifies it: 368 emails from 113 wineries, across all years in the archive. Subject-line figures cover the 12 months to September 30, 2026. The archive records what was sent, not how it performed.
